Hello HN community! Sri and Brian here from CloudPal (https://www.cloudpal.io/). We are building a tool to help companies reduce their cloud costs by stopping non-production resources when they’re not needed.

The problem: Almost every company on the cloud struggles with cost management. While optimizing production costs can be complex, reducing non-production costs should be a straightforward case of shutting down resources when they’re not in use. However, most companies lack an elegant solution for this.

The solution: CloudPal

- A downtime scheduler for non-production resources (currently supports AWS EC2 & RDS)

- start / stop button, allowing users to override the schedule (eg. if working on weekends).

Next up on the feature roadmap is:

- Intelligent start / stop functionality for non-production resources - resources will automatically stop when not in use and quickly spin back up when needed, resulting in lots more delicious cost savings!

- Support for more cloud providers and resource types (eg. ECS, K8s, etc.)

I am working in a fast paced startup. I feel like writing terraform scripts is slowing us down and I think doing everything manually will be the fastest way go forward. At the same, I don't want to be in a situation where I will be spending lot of time in importing the resources back to code via Terraform at a later stage. In the company, we are all engineers and we are all experts in building the application, and DevOPS isn't our greatest strength and we don't have any budget to hire an expert. Did any of you face a similar situation? How do you strike a balance? At what stage did you end up adopting it and at what cost?

A friend and I spent the last few weekends creating a site for poetry duels. The concept was simple: two poets can choose between a verbal face-off or a constructive build-up, to create a poem one stanza at a time. The duel is set against a stipulated time frame, to decide who wins.

Given our hatred for signups, we have kept the site it signup free. We worked with social logins instead. :)
