Ask HN: How to move from development to security compliance?
Anyone made that shift?
Any pointers appreciated, thanks

I'm tired of talking to headhunters and the whole jumping-through-the-hoops that comes with the job hunting process.
The thing is, I'm a decent developer but more of a generalist type with lots of entrepreneurial drive (though haven't had any success yet), so my CV is not very streamlined.
I'm more looking to find a business partner (with money as I need a job) than an employer.
Anyone in a similar situation?
In the past, I just added each project to my CV, but I get the impression that this is not a good way anymore as it seems I get less often invited to interviews.
I'd like to shorten my cv to one page but not sure how.
Can anyone recommend someone who would review my cv?
Alternatively, do you know examples of CVs that you consider well done?
btw recently moved to the UK
Many thanks
I tried many things but never concentrated on one thing. This was fine in the past, but now in my end-forties and with one young kid, I am seriously stuck in my career.
I feel that I lack any sense of "business smarts" and just running around in circles. This has turned my life into a depression and it becomes more and more difficult to see a way out.
I need help but not sure where to get it.
I consider therapy but I think what I need is career or business advice. Best a combination of both.
Anyone in a similar situation? Where did you find help?
Many thanks.
But I have a huge problem finding that work. I'm constantly changing subjects and never get anywhere. I'm stuck and desperate.
I think that "what to work on" is a much bigger problem than the "how". Yes, I understand the need to focus, to niche, to do the hard work and so on. But how to find such work?
My suspicion is that luck plays (again) a mucher bigger part in this than people like to admit.
How did you find your "deep work"?
I would like to understand better how lawyers think. What are the fundamentals of law?
Can anyone recommend me an introduction resource aimed at the layman? Preferably some engaging MOOC, but a good book would also be valuable.
Many thanks
I'm especially interested in supply chain and logistics but having a hard time getting a foot in the door. I have no previous experience in that area, and as a complete outsider, I have to go far outside my comfort zone when trying to make contacts.
So far I tried cold emailing people in that industry and asking them to help me understand their business. It hasn't been very fruitful yet.
Did anyone try to move into a domain without any prior experience? How did you do this?
Any help very much appreciated.
I recently submitted a proposal for a conference without expecting anything to happen. To my big surprise I got accepted and after the first excitement has settled I'm slowly getting the chills ;-)
The conference is in a significant niche for what I do so I'm going to meet and present to people who could be quite important for me.
To those who have done this before, how did you prepare yourself for the experience? I'm talking less about the content of the speech but everything else.
Any tips highly appreciated, many thanks in advance!
I'm currently searching for a new job. In all the interviews I did so far no-one ever seemed to had a look at my blog, github or side projects.
Instead, I get asked only about work experience (or have to do code interview). My problem is: I'm really bad at selling myself and talking about past experience unless I get asked very specific questions. If I have to tell in a free-form manner about me I usually don't impress.
But I'm a very motivated developer who cares about his craft. I'd very much prefer to only get judged by things I produce. Is that even possible?
What's your expericene?
Is this what you think too? If so, any explanations to why? As someone who wants to work remote-only long-term, should I consider changing my skill-set?
What do you answer? Do you start from the end or from the beginning? Do you have a speech prepared? How long do you talk, how technical or detailed do you get?
Do you know any example (e.g. video) of what makes a good self presentation?
I feel I really need to prepare this, any pointers or stories appreciated.
