I know there are a ton of other choices for e-commerece platforms but the business in need is a small/local Rock and Roll bar/restaurant that is interested in selling their own merchandise with a collection of other affiliate products that fit 'the vibe'. The store itself will have anywhere between 20-75 products, which is why I thought that Magento (Magento Go, to be more specific) and Shopify would probably be the easiest to get up and running. The Owner isn't very tech savvy himself, which is another reason I chose those two.

Any suggestions and advice is greatly appreciated!

Hey HN. I was redesigning a restaurant's website when the Owner approached me about starting an E-Commerce store, which is a space I really don't know much about. He wanted to include not only his store's merchandise and memorabilia but also a collection of furniture, art and other things from a certain time period from other marketplaces.

I know of the popular platforms like Magento, Shopify and Wordpress plugins like WooCommerce to use as a starting point. But which would be the best option for a small-sized restaurant trying to break in to E-commerce? And I guess the better question would be..where/how do I get started with selling other products within my own marketplace?

I’ve been doing front-end coding for a few years now but recently have been trying to teach myself Ruby on Rails on the side. I have already gone through a few resources…all the Codecademy lessons for Ruby, CodeSchools “Try Ruby” and “Ruby Bits” series, “Mr. Neighborly’s Humble Little Ruby Book” to learn the basics of Ruby…and now I’m just getting to the tip of the iceberg with Rails. I’m currently working through M. Hartl’s popular “Rails Tutorial” and the most recent edition of “Agile Development with Rails”.

I’m hoping to transition to a Junior Rails developer role but am not sure of what general knowledge I need to have or what I should expect when applying to these positions. Because I’m familiar with some aspects of web development, should I be able to land a job more easily with my front-end experience and learn the ropes from my future employer or would I benefit more from buckling down for a few months and learning the inner-workings of the framework?

Hey Hacker News, I am in the market for a new laptop and have a few ideas but want to hear your guys suggestions or forewarnings about whats out there. I'd like to keep it in the $500 range but a little more (if it's worth it) is ok.

It's main use will be for all my dev work and a little graphic design here and there. I won't be doing a whole lot of gaming and will most likely be putting a Linux OS (in addition to whatever it comes pre-installed with) on it a somepoint.

I have put together a few web pages (html,css,jQuery) but am very new to Web Development. I have only done front-end design. I am comfortable with Linux but don't know Apache or MySQL but am in the process of learning Rails as my framework. Will learning Rails be better then learning a LAMP stack for getting a website online? Or am I comparing apples and oranges? And what would be some different hosting options for each?
