As the title says, what technological development do you expect in the next decade? What are you excited/afraid about?

There is so much criticism about Facebook and Google and the open web is clearly in danger. Instead of fighting a fight without hope, why don't we start to build an infrastructure and community that delivers the original promises of the internet?

Let's assume we would start over today with all what we know, what would be the principles of a light net and how can be kickstart it?

My first suggestion is that it should be geared towards the needs of communities, not individuals and that it should involve people without a technical background right from the start. It should be based on transparency and accessibility and organizations that subscribe to it should subscribe to these values, too.

Hope this can trigger some discussion, as I am tired of just talk, no action. I think HN has all the capabilities to make a change here.

I have been a supporter of basic income for some time now, but lately I started to have some doubts about its long term feasibility. Without getting into too much detail, it is mostly because even if you have an universal basic income, the individual and communities still depend on the good will of the political system. Let´s say we have a president Trump and he decides something stupid, it could entirely obliterate or at least minimize the gained value of independence (i.e. through hyper inflation). So instead of thinking about that idea, can we assemble a set of existing technology that would allow everyone to cover the basic needs of life?

Based on the definition of Max Neef the fundamentals human needs are:

-subsistence (i.e. food) -protection (i.e. housing) -affection -understanding -participation -leisure -creation -identity -freedom

I imagine achieving this could allow a group of individuals to accomplish independence, self sufficiency and open new ways organizing life and structure a society. A precondition would be that the toolset aims for maximum independence from existing states/ governments. While we might have not make it all the way, how far are we down that road as of today?

I mean, in the sense of moving away from certain services (Google Analytics etc), metrical cues, like people are less willing to reveal their geolocation etc. What´s your experience? Can you see any change? How do you feel about it? etc.

The pirate party is running for election 2013, chances are we gonna break the 5% barrier and get some seats in the national parliament of Germany. Whilst it is pretty easy to nominate yourself right now (login into a wiki, announce nomination), I haven´t seen much conceptwise. The pirates stand for a massive extension of political participation, exploiting the net to make decisions, develop position and so forth. Yet, the software we use is a UX nightmare and lacks formal power. Liquid feedback, our tool, is more therometer about the party´s current status, than an proper tool of political influence. Plus there is a big opposition against any virtual committee (mainly driven by security and fraud concerns). Nevertheless as a MP you are formally binded only to your conscience, and have much freedom to organize yourself, build platforms and so on. One idea would be to have the MP as proxy or megaphone, not making any political submissions him/herself, but only announcing the will of the virtual assemblies. So my questions is, if you would be a MP and your goal would be to allow a huge amount of people to influence political decision making via modern information technology, how would you do it? What problems to do see? Which processes need to be tackled and so forth.
