In January of next year, I’ll be 6 months away from getting out of the Navy, which means I’m eligible to participate in the Department of Defense transition program known as SkillBridge. SkillBridge allows military members the opportunity to arrange their own full-time internship with a company or organization anywhere in the US. I still get paid by the Navy, and the company I work for gets free labor and a chance to help a veteran, so it’s a win-win for all parties.

Some friends of mine decided to pursue competitive veteran internship programs at places like Goldman Sachs and FaceBook, which often turn into full-time positions. Another one of my friends decided to do something less rigorous and more interesting, and went to work for a farm for a few months. Right now, I’m leaning towards joining a startup to gain some operational experience at a faster pace than I’m used to in the military/government.

Looking back on your careers in technology, business, engineering, etc., what would you do if you had an opportunity like this?

I'm teaching an intro level cyber security class to college freshmen next semester for the first time. Are there any teachers out there, part-time or full-time, who can pass along some advice? I'm thinking along the lines of managing the classroom, first impressions, connecting with students, prep, etc.

Just to note: the lectures, labs, and assignments are already made and the department expects the adjuncts to use them. I'd still like to sprinkle in some personal anecdotes and lessons when possible, however.

Recently I've noticed that I'm extremely self-conscious, to the point where I am doubting myself before speaking at meetings or team events. In private, however, I am very confident in my abilities, intellect, value, etc, and it shows in my performance reviews. But for some reason, that confidence isn't translating when working with others. In fact, it seems to be making it worse. I am highly confident when working alone and terribly lacking in confidence when doing anything with more than a few people. Anyone else struggle with this or have any ideas how I can become more relaxed in group settings?
