Pause with: ps -cx | grep -i $1 | awk '{print $1}' | xargs kill -s SIGSTOP

Unpause with: ps -cx | grep -i $1 | awk '{print $1}' | xargs kill -s SIGCONT

[the difference is SIG{STOP,CONT}, also this is for convenience, so I prefer -i ]
