I used to be a Java nerd back in college, but ever since then I haven't touched it. My work for the last 3-4 years has mostly been in Python and C++, and I have forgotten a lot of in's and out's of Java.

So, what is the best (and fast) way to get back in the groove with a language? Any suggestions on small projects that make you use (and hence revise) old languages that you know already?

A related question is, how do you guys stay in touch with technologies that you have learned but haven't had a chance to use in a long time?

Are there any plans for a basic API for Hacker News? These functions will be useful:

1. List of recent/top stories (we can get this from the RSS feed though).

2. List of all users who upmodded a story.

3. All stories submitted by a user.

4. All stories upmodded by a user.

The response could be in JSON or any other format...

I have been thinking about this: What do you think is the need that drives the "social" media? Is it the feeling of charity, or something more personal, or do these users (who submit and filter content) expect others to return the favor?

I am working on a collaborative filtering startup and looking for a partner/developer who has experience in building scalable high-performance websites in Python. The geographic location doesn't matter as we are willing to work and collaborate online.

Where should I look for him/her? Any ideas...
