Are there any small businesses or industries you wish you knew more about? What do you wish you knew?
Thanks in advance!
I've seen discussions about companies that give project based interviews, but have never seen one in the wild. I'd be happy to complete a small project to show I'm competent, I just don't know which companies to target.
About me: All professional experience with .NET stack (willing to learn others, if given the chance) Located in Seattle (Remote would also be an option).
Thanks in advance for your suggestions!
Any ideas on where to start?
What I'm Looking for: Someone to point me to some good DS&A resources (I've looked at a number of Open Courseware lectures, but I've found the quality of the video makes it difficult to follow the slides/code). Also, some good practice problems and answers to the occasional question. Any general insight into the interview process would be greatly appreciated.
What you get: A bright, eager pupil, the satisfaction of helping your fellow hacker and an unlimited supply of gratitude. Or I could do some free web dev work for you. Your choice :)
I would also be willing to write up and share the process with the community, for anyone else that might be in this situation in the future.
Thanks in advance.
Why I Quit: Job was intellectually unfulfilling, company completely fails the Spolsky Test (I don't want to sound like a prima donna, but I've been asking for a semi-new laptop and second monitor since I started, either of which would have increase my productivity significantly), little opportunity for career growth. I’ve also realized that I am lucky enough to enjoy a profession that is in demand despite the current economic climate.
What I'll be doing with my newfound free time: Between working nearly full-time as a .NET developer (35+ hours a week) and being a full-time student, I haven't had time to learn the data structures/algorithms basics that my course curriculum hasn’t covered (which I find genuinely interesting). I'll be spending time learning that stuff, along with working on some personal projects and improving my Ruby on Rails chops. I might even read a book or take a nap.
I'll also be looking for a job. So, if in a month or two you would like to bring on an entry level developer who is refreshed, has recently broadened his skillset and is eager to learn new things, my email is in my profile.
Any insight is much appreciated.
Here are my questions: - Has anyone had experience with this type of arrangement? - Would any of you bring somebody in under this type of arrangements? - Is anyone else interested in this type of work/travel?
If so, I would seriously consider attempting to build a network for interested workers and employers.
Advice/Suggestions are much appreciated.
