I have one large (and several small) personal projects to accomplish during the next year or two of my life (including building a new house) and one professional programming project to start planning. I think an online to-do list or task manager would be a help in terms of planning, scheduling and reminding me. I do not need a mobile app, instead I'm interested in a solution with great desktop interface. What do you use? Do you recommend it? If so, why?

Will HN ever support email notices to people who start threads or post to threads ... to alert them that new messages have been posted?

If not, what about supporting individual RSS feeds for each thread we want to track or intend to participate in?

Does anyone else see the value in features like these, or is it just me?

I'm seeking a simple to-to list, outliner, or task manager to help me list individual tasks -- and to sub-list in priority order the steps needed to accomplish each task.

I think a tool like this was posted here some time in the past, but I cannot remember its name.

If you have any suggestions for a tool that can handle this in a simple, effective interface please post it in this thread -- and let's discuss the pros and cons of each so I can figure out which is the best tool for my needs.

I seem to have a huge number of tasks to accomplish in the new responsibility I've taken on as a manager of a small farm property, and in between programming projects I would love to be able to go to a simple online tool and immediately see a complete list of all the tasks I need to accomplish -- along with the required steps needed to complete each task -- so I can focus on what I NEED to focus on and therefore become more productive.

For years I've entertained the dream of creating an auction service that may one day compete effectively with eBay. I have a concept that eliminates the need for "reputation", eliminates PayPal as the primary payment option, provides secure escrow service for both buyers and sellers, send email alerts when items are listed with your keywords or in your elected categories, etc. ... but these are just MY primary ideas, and I'm interested in hearing what other people might like to see in such a venture.

What features would YOU like to see in an eBay competitor?

I need to create a server image and configure it with special software. Then I need to replicate this pre-configured server horizontally for lots of data access on an intermittent basis.

I've looked briefly at GoGrid and it seems they offer this type of service. My questions:

Does anyone have experience with GoGrid that they can share?

Are their other companies offering similar services that you might suggest or recommend?

Are their other alternatives that may be better or more appropriate to occasionally high volume use but most of the time very limited use?

How do I find the meaning of these HN prefs so I will know how to set them properly?
