I've never had to set-up my own server before, thanks to hosting providers (like media temple / dreamhost / etc).

I recently realized I am deficient in that area and would like learn the basics, enough so I could (hypothetically) buy a slice from slicehost and set it up.

Does anyone have any good primers/online tutorials?

Do you guys know of any awesome api's?

I'm looking at a few jobs in SF on craigslist and no one seems to list compensation of any sort (salary, bonus, equity) for a Front-End Developer or PHP Developer.

Any idea what average salary is for someone with 2+ years and plenty of demo's?

In the past my comparisons show that compete usually only shows 70-80% of the traffic a site gets. Is anyone interested in sharing some stats on their site ( I will do the same ) to get a better picture of how inaccurate compete really is?

Don't know if or why there have been no requests for api access, but can we have it?
