I think of myself as a relatively good software engineer (based on feedback), but I never specialized in anything. So I am here with 12 YoE but I don’t stand out with anything. I know the boring Java/Javascript/Python/AWS/etc. stack, and use these to write boring REST apis or data processing pipelines.

Edit: by boring I mean: there are too many people with the same knowledge/experience.

What is something that I could start specializing in now? Something with a big future.

I and my wife are thinking about starting a web design company, which would target smaller businesses. We would provide custom web and mobile app designs, custom website development, but I was also thinking about providing simple web hosting as well (for small wordpress sites or something similar).

She is great with digital arts and recently started learning web design and UX and she loves it. I'm currently working at a FAANG as a software engineer, but I'm getting more and more bored every day.

However, we are a bit worried whether it is even worth starting a business like this nowadays, because there are countless businesses providing the same services, and I'm not sure if we could get enough clients. Also I've done some research, and found many landing page and website builder tools, some of them are even free.

Is there anything that could make us stand out from the crowd? Is there anything missing in this web design/development space? What could we do to siphon some clients from big web design/development/hosting companies? (other than being extra cheap)

I would like to create a portfolio website for a graphic artist. She makes illustrations, logos, etc. digitally, using Photoshop and Illustrator. The website will be simple: a collection of images displayed with the works she have done and a contact form.

The requirements:

- She, as a non-tech person, must be able to upload new works (images) to the website (i.e. it must be user friendly, uploading an image to S3 through AWS console is not good enough)

- Must support a contact form

- The design must be customizable

- If it is self-hosted solution, I want to host it on AWS

I really have no experience with websites like these and I do not want to reinvent the wheel (i.e. develop something myself), I'm looking for something simple, I was thinking about using Wordpress, but it feels like an overkill for a website like this.

Do you know any tools/website builders/etc. built for such use cases?

I created a project for learning purposes and having fun. I have a Raspberry Pi with a camera, looking out my apartment window. It takes a picture every minute, and uploads it to a server. Every day I concat those images to create a time-lapse video, like this: https://hn-share-bucket.s3.amazonaws.com/example.mp4

The whole thing is automatized, it has been running in the past 3-4 months without problems, I have around 90 videos now and tons of images.

Now I'm looking for ideas what could I do with these images/videos? Do you have any fun project idea?
