Ask HN: Any hands-on product design/prototyping jobs?
I'm a design-focused mechanical engineering & mechatronics grad(2010) looking for paid opportunities involving hands-on prototyping. I have had exposure to all parts of the design process, from need-finding to CAD to prototyping to manufacturing. My strength lies in the ability to rapidly prototype and iterate to a user-centric solution.(If necessary, I can make a fully functioning coffee maker out of poster board, some rubber bands, and a few pieces of string.)
I have had a mix of successes and failures(learning experiences), but I am most proud of the following projects(done on teams of 2-4):
1)Designing, prototyping, and licensing a med device which reduces the risk of complications after nasal surgery
2)Designing, prototyping, and manufacturing a device which adds vitamin power to flour mills in rural areas(http://socialelab.org/?page_id=70).
3)Launching the MVP of a tea search directory, http://www.theteafinder.com.
My ideal opportunity would be working with a small team in a prototyping space(like Techshop/Hackerspace) on a project which positively impacts some community of people. Any tips/leads are greatly appreciated!
