Would you spend time on a side project hosted on GitHub or practicing algorithms? I'm finding myself chasing my tail at times. I do have a full time job but I want to find something else to do. I would like to get job using Electron/React or React native (don't hate - I find Electron fun to build desktop apps) so I'm building a project that uses Electron/React so I can get the experience.
I realize my time is up at the company I'm working for. I've been through numerous downsizes, layoffs and outsourcing over the last 20 years. I understand that my time will come because I'm a number no matter how hard I work. Honestly I'm tired of the game and want to get out before I get axed. I want to get a job where people care about what they do and software is a product not a cost center. Should I even apply at start ups? Has any one here managed to get a better job at the age of 50? What are the realistic expectations that I should have for myself?
I was thinking of posting a project to Github showcasing my skills. Do recruiters or potential hires look at these things? Has anyone done this and has it helped them? It would be more than a basic project. I was thing of using multiple technologies and deploying to Digital Ocean along with clear instructions. I have 20 years experience as a software engineer at the same job and want to move on. It has been a while since I looked for a job! Thanks!
