I’m starting to realise it’s hard to find people who say useful things at work or speak concisely. (I’m also at fault here). I partly blame layoffs as people feel the need to constantly look very productive.

What’s the best way to improve my speech in such a way where I’m concise and the words I say are intentional? I want to keep people engaged when I speak. Trying to be a man of few words, but also still seem engaged despite being quiet.

I stopped caring about my job a while ago. I’ve become somewhat numb and withdrawn due to a mix of substance abuse, overworking, poor sleep and poor cognition habits due to AI usage.

For those who have gone through this mental exhaustion, what has helped?

The large companies I’ve worked at (including FAANG) seemed to thrive on kudos via performative actions. Like the majority of the team is doing useless stuff that management thinks is impressive while the couple all stars get the team closer to the goal.

Meanwhile, a lot of managers calendars are purely just 1:1s with devs on the team which clearly has very little value add to the team.

Anyone else notice this? Not sure if there’s a word for it, but it’s somewhat demoralising working with a bunch of corporate office workers cosplaying as engineers

What options in today’s world exist to support critical thinking? I’m at FAANG basically trying to stay afloat as an expat in a foreign country and hate my job. Mostly forced to do AI LLM stuff. Security and quality out the window since management stopped caring about that.

I miss deep thinking and training my brain. Should I pursue a masters in math or something? I have a masters in general CS, but this was 10 years ago.

Some guy in my city writes poems using a typewriter and his brain. I paid 5 pounds for it and it was one of the best things I’ve read in 2 years.

Maybe I’m just burnt out from all this AI hype and feel the need to speak into the void. 10 years into this career and feeling empty. Between my company ranking employees with AI and doing layoffs using AI, I can’t help but to think this whole thing is a sick joke

Feeling apathetic and emotionless. Working for a company that is doing random PIPs and RTO while still reeling in billions.

How can I revive my energy to do my job at a higher capacity without feeling so burnt out and tired? I already exercise and do some social things, but the weight of the job and work pulls me down so hard, feel pretty trapped and depressed.

Upon testing Cloudflare for families on 1.1.1.3, which filters explicit contents, I noticed Google results are obfuscated as well.

For example, typing in Porn yields no porn results.

How is this possible with just DNS if the site uses TLS and the connection is still secure?

For this to be possible, wouldn’t they need to have a valid DV cert impersonating Google?

I’m looking for recommended readings to more deeply understand JavaScript. In particular, things like Cloudflare Workers, their internals, build systems, etc.

I’ve been coding in JS for years, but would like to dive a bit deeper into the ecosystem around it.

I can’t say I understand why trillion dollar companies are doing mass layoffs, but I guess that’s why I’m not a business man.

Where do these people get jobs if tens of thousands of people flood the market at the same time? Is it a blood bath? Curious on peoples thoughts who lived through dot com bubble, as I was only about 6 years old. I’ve been through the leetcode grind and system design grind, etc, but with that, is it still even possible to get a good paying tech job in this downturn?
