Ask HN: With trust in Firefox gone, is Chrome-ish the only option?
It feels like basically everything is Chrome nowadays.
Are there any alternatives to Chrome-based browsers?
Best wishes and have a wonderful week

Long version: I’m starting to burn out searching for a note system that suites my needs and values.
My values: - Privacy and Security - Open Source
My needs: - Markdown writing - Note printing (somewhat beautiful) - OS agnostic (i use Linux/iOS) - Sync across devices. - PDF storage (this is where trust comes in, as some documents contain sensitive info)
My capabilities: I run my own VPS, and as a software developer I’m familiar with git, ssh etc.
As always, tradeoffs are acceptable if I get something in return. For example it doesn’t HAVE to be open source software.
I‘m struggling to find something decent, that is not overblown. I don’t need note revision, I don’t need note-linking, I don’t need fancy productivity hacks or calendar-support.
Best wishes from Germany.
I‘m in a bit of a pinch. I‘m currently part of a team that needs help with C++ development.
My background is around 9 years of iOS / macOS development using ObjC / Swift and a few projects using C#.
In the recent months / years I tried to hone my software-craftsmanship and stay up-to-date on stuff like TDD, functional programming, protocol-oriented-programming, moving away from objects, and so on.
I could help out my team and my employer by diving into C++. However I have some prejudices which I want to sort out:
- I’m hesitant towards C++ as it seems an ancient programming language and I don’t know for how long it will be around.
- I‘m hesistant on investing time into C++ as I don’t know how much acquiring this language as a skill will help me advance my career as a software-developer.
Could you provide some pro/contra arguments?

I get it that this questions seems rather superficial. But please hear me out:
Which HDD to buy?
I had a WD MyPassport fail on me once. I opened it but the connector was custom-made. Removing it from the enclosure was a rough adventure - I basically ended up “breaking free” the HDD from the plastic case. I had to connect a custom USB-A Connector to it to get my data back. Very bad experience. If possible the HDD should check the following boxes:
Solid, robust enclosure. The case should protect the HDD in case it might ever get dropped.
Long Term Drive Performance for the use-case of “only being turned on for backup syncing”, meaning roughly every two weeks / every month (if needed). So the drive is turned off most of the time.
Removable drive. If the case / connector fails, I’d love to be able to connect the drive to an SATA or whatever-default-connector it might have. WD burnt me.
So what’s your suggestion? Which HDD + which enclosure? Is buying a “complete” option, like e.g. the LaCie mobile drive or G-Technology G-Drive, even remotely viable?
Bonus question: I use macOS, Arch Linux & Windows. Which file system would you suggest?
Best wishes from southern Germany!
