Recently I have been thinking about sharing images with friends over messaging applications. Often messaging applications download images and store them on a the receivers device. As the person sharing the photo, I have little issue with this...I shared the photo after all. However, what if the receiver has some automated backup service enabled which backs up that image to a Google service or other backup service. Now I, as a user of the messaging application agreed to the terms and conditions for using that application. However I didn't agree to the terms of the backup and I might not be happy with the data I shared being used in the way. Assuming you fell out with a friend at a later date, could you be liable under GDPR for backing up photos you received from someone else, without their permission?

Does anyone have experience of changing management culture? How do you get managers and business types to realise that they are harming the business, morale, engineers and ultimately the product/customer by constantly splitting and reassigning resource. In short how do you take the power back and empower engineers to make logical and thought out decisions where business types and managers including ex engineers are hell bent on treating engineers as a bucket of resource that they can arbitrarily assign to projects as and when their priorities change (even mid-sprint). How do you force them to cut out the noise in order to allow engineers to build momentum, purpose and ultimately great products? How do you move away from a project centric business towards a product centric business which possesses a more wholistic view and considers more than just the end goals of a project I.e. how other features relate. Does anyone have experience of changing culture to this degree?

I have been considering starting a business (on the side) for the second time. I have previously run a business alongside my full time job, a job which I enjoyed very little. Running my first business offered me some stimulation. I then undertook a part-time undergraduate degree. As I wound my first business down (in order to undertake a second degree) I started to spend more and more time on my degree. All was well. Shortly after this I got married. I moved out of my low maintenance flat with my wife into a new house around 15-20 minutes further afield. I have since acquired a dog (a great source of exercise) and am hopefully going to have my first child within the next year. Shortly after moving I went out and got a new job which I enjoy a great deal more. This has given me some advancement. It is however not without it's frustrations and riddled with management/business types. With all of this my free time has somewhat dwindled - bear in mind that my wife is also a full time professional. This has made it very hard to consistently study (mathematics) in evenings. I find I am able to do things which come more natually to me and which offer the opportunity for creativity - not just absorbing information in order to put it down on an assignment page (which I struggle with). As such I intend to take a break from my degree. I am however acutely aware this may mean I never finish it. I also recently discovered that an idea I had been sitting on for a number of years has been discovered by somone else and proactively undertaken (as was always the risk by sitting on it). I am generally a person who hates giving things up. I am in my late 20s. There is so much I want to learn and a lot which interests me. I am fleeting between too many interests/subjects, I am struggling for a foothold in order to regain focus and I am concerned about long-term career prospects where I am. Can anyone provide advice? How did you decide what to invest your time in? What would you do?

My new router has just arrived. As is the case for most now, it was supplied FOC by my ISP. When configuring the router, I couldn't help but notice that in the re-configuration maintenance page it said this:

"We'll periodically update your router software automatically. There may be times when you will be advised to do this manually. Our Technical Support Team will assist you if this is the case."

Immediately I started to look for the option to disable this. However I could not find one. I then contacted their technical support in an attempt to turn it off. Their advisor informed me that they would not turn it off. I proceeded to state that would not, did not mean could not and probed for information which would enable me to turn it off. At this point the advisor informed that it was a secure line and that the upgrade process was infallible in terms of security; yet was unable to inform me of the security processes/practices applied. The advisor (getting infuriated at this point as I was clearly off-script) stated that they would try to find out from a higher technical body (internally). After being put on hold for a further 20 minutes I gave up and hung up the phone.

Next I resorted to a (quick) Google search in the hope that an answer would be reveal itself. I couldn't find an easy answer. Most answers I found focussed on some means of hacking the firmware on the device (based on the fact that the router was a re-brand of some other common make/model e.g. Netgear).

Given that my logs tell me I receive unsolicited connection attempts out of some countries in the East every 5 minutes or so, I feel I should be worried that I have little or no control over the firmware running my router. Have other people experienced this too? Is strikes me as a red flag in terms of security.

I just recently attended a wedding. A number of old school friends were there. As usual there were a number of people who wanted to discuss what they were doing, and more importantly (to them), what they were earning. I couldn't help but notice that a number of people in other fields who did not take the university route, but rather the apprenticeship route, earn significantly more than those in jobs relevant to the degree they did. I also know some people who work in this industry that only possess college level qualifications and earn more than me, but are certainly less effective, less knowledgeable and more narrow-minded. I am not by any means suggesting that all people who possess degree level qualifications are better than those who do not, or that they should earn more. I just can't help but wonder if a degree was the right choice. I certainly feel it has made me much more open-minded and well-rounded and has opened up avenues to areas of CS which I do not feel I would have been exposed to unless I did a degree. What are peoples thoughts on this? Should I be bothered by what I earn? I am happy in my job but would really like to increase my salary. Is this just a whole lot of whining/boasting?
