YC application has this question. Is there a trend here out of successful YC alumni ? How long have you known your co-founder for and how did you meet?

I've been a web programmer most of the time but have basic experience with C++, C# for non web stuffs (desktop, basic unity 2d etc). I always wanted to get into video game development and I think the time has arrived to move on from my current web dev job. I recently joined an agency in Bay Area and I'm getting paid roughly 50K/yr. Work load is heavy and I got quickly assigned a lot of responsibilities and even have to deal with managing and training new hires. I'm fairly good and competitive on my skills but lately I'm having a feeling that I'm heavily underpaid. How much do you make working on similar agencies writing or maintaining traditional CRUD apps ?

Are there any known PHP based startups gone open source and doing well ?

I recently had discussion with my colleague about securing own's web server. According to him, a server is secure when you "show" what you want to show to public and what you do not want to be public is always inaccessible to them.

My questions:

Is it a acceptable definition of a secure server ?

How does file permissions affect server security ?

What are best measures to consider to secure own's server ?

When you release more than one product does is become a company ? What is the actual difference between a company and a startup ?

I work in small web development firm. Since we are just starting out with our product / service aside for bootstraping, I have to take care of all the responsibility of business aspects (searching clients, communicating with them, managing projects etc) and my most day hours are involved in working as a developer too.

I'm getting tired of this double role. But, one thing is sure most HNers were once solo founders and have got pass these sentiments. Any suggestion to keep oneself motivated in such ? or should I quit working double roles and focus more on development, which i enjoy most ?

I am usually more inclined to thoughts shared here in HN than in the article under discussion. Sometimes, i completely ignore articles and satisfy myself with HN discussion on that topic. How do you do it ?

Once in a while I hear in internet that there are two ways to stay in software market - one, build something cheaper and sell it to thousands of customers. Or, build a high end product and sell to a niche customer at reasonably high price.

I would like to know how high people/enterprise are paying for a software. Do we have any list where we can see the the top 10 or say top 100 software in use ranked by their price ? Have you used any of those high priced software in your career ?
