I'm writing a SQL tutorial for a bunch of marketing friends. I'd like for them to code as they go.

They've told me that I'll lose them if I ask them to set up SQLite, MySQL, etc. on their laptops. So, I’d like to use a web-based interactive console like that on W3schools (http://www.w3schools.com/sql/trysql.asp?filename=trysql_select_all) with my own data. Basically load up some tables and point the users to the interface. Is anyone aware of this functionality or how to roll our own?

Good morning. For streaming, I mostly use Netflix. When a selection is not available I look at other services starting with Amazon Prime. This can take a long time and not arrive at the best choice (e.g. i found it for sale on Prime but it was free on Hulu). I'm looking for a service or a way that shows content and details (e.g. is it free with my membership?) across different providers, even those that i don't subscribe (e.g. Hulu). Is something like this available? If not, any suggestions (e.g. consolidate each providers api in one interface)?

Hello. My interests and livlihood involves working with data - accessing, analyzing, etc. - to improve the organizations of where I work. I'm coming across 2 particular problems:

1. Difficult to stay up to date on all things related to data & analysis. Hitting a bunch of sites and feeds is not very effective. 2. Keeping track of data/analytic resources in one place. I'm talking things like databases/software, tutorials, methods, case studies, and books. I like tracking these things for reference and to help others.

Proposed solution: a website with 2 initial parts: 1. a digg/hacker news/reddit part where users can submit links and vote them up or down. Could possibly include comments and an Ask HN equivalent. 2. an organized list of resources. People could submit their favorites.

What do you think... 1. Is there a need? Would you use this? 2. I'm thinking of creating a minimum viable product with WordPress on a shared server since I have limited web dev skills, limited budget, and trying to launch sooner than later. Is this stupid? If so, which part - WP, shared server, or both? 3. Having people submit links is good but this would need moderation, especially comments. Would you skip this? Maybe take an approach like R - Blogger where posts from other authors are automatically submitted based on key words AND comments are turned off.

Good day! Can I get your input?

1. I have a couple of web-based biz ideas (who doesn't!) that I'd like to build.

2. The ideas mostly involve simple database interactions. Basically, gathering and presenting data. I'll eventually need to address things like user management, performance, & security.

3. I am not proficient at a particular web framework / language

4. I am proficient at SQL, know html/xml in degrees, and know slightly-more-than-nothing about javascript. OO experience is very limited at best. Have done a little with PHP, (OLD) ASP, and Unix

5. My goal is not to have a perfect app but rather to get something going and go from there. I want to acquire first hand build experience. Thus, options like elance or hiring a programmer are out for this exercise.

6. I'm dedicated to putting in the time to learn (and fail) but certainly appreciate using tools, languages, etc with limited ramp-up times.

With this said, any suggestions for languages/ frameworks / tools to use?

Hello. Do you set goals? If so how do you go about doing it, I'm talking about things like...

- certain categories (finances, relationships, etc.)? - do you limit the goals and/or prioritize them? - do you use a SMART method (Specific, Measurable, Actionable, Realistic, Time related)? - do you set a plan for each goal? - how do you keep focus, avoid distractions, and keep attacking the goal? - do you write them done or do you use certain software? - does setting or not setting goals helped you? - what has worked the best for you?

The applications I received were astonishingly good. Thorough and honest and clear and direct. They were motivating and demonstrated just how much people can do when they put their minds to it. I read every word of every application and I learned a lot.

If I had 60 seats, I still would have had too many people awe-inspiring applying. Unfortunately, I have nowhere near that, and so I had to make difficult, irrational and not particularly fair choices. Alas, I’m going to be unable to work with you in 2009. There are still interviews and such to go through, so I don’t have the final group selected, but I thought the fairest thing to do was let you know as soon as possible.

The good news, and I hope you think it’s good news, is that you don’t need me. As I said before, I have no magic wand, no secret recipe. Your decision to just make it happen, to push forward, to change... that was the hard part.

Go. Do that. Blow them away. I fully expect it will happen.

If you don’t want to be seen by others, you should delete your lens (if you made one).
