I've been mostly doing web development during the past 5-6 years and want to get back into the Desktop application development (C#, VB .net) Do you guys have any ideas for small projects i can work on that may help your day to day tasks with a desktop app?

I own a website (http://www.bongotones.com) that I started in 2009. At it's peak we were doing 250K a year from advertisement. Due to some unfortunate issues, bad business decisions (eg. bad money spent on SEO, design work, etc), business partners being spread across different cities and just priorities we let go of the site. It still has great potential with some TLC. In our prime we were number 3 on google for "Free Ringtones" and over the past 5 years have had over 52Million page views and 6million unique views. the problem with selling on flippa is that lately due to us not having time to keep the site up and only making money from adsense the revenue has dropped dramatically BUT we do have a database of over 180K registered users and 120K ringtones. I think that's where the value of the website is now, a PR3 website with over 6Million pages indexed on google and the database. i'm posting the link here to see if anyone would be interested or get some guidance from people on how to go about selling this.

I created this as a side project last year and never got around to launching it. So decided to revive it and put it out there to see if anyone finds it useful. With the site you can create a buzz by automatically calling your clients to play pre-recorded message (mp3), computer generated message (it reads your text) or an SMS.

over the past 2 weeks we've seen a very high spike in direct traffic to our site.

we basically jumped from 5000 a day to 15000 a day with most of the increase being targetted towards only 2 of our pages with high bounce rates and small "avg time on site".

any one else experience this? i look at the logs and the traffic is not from one IP. the top 30 big hitters are all different IP and subnets.

any google experts willing to shed some light on this?

Since i used to work in the entertainment industry before, i always ended up getting lots of emails about different events, promotions at restaurants clubs etc. i never ended up reading them so i was thinking there has to be a better way to engage your potential customers than just random emails.

so as a side project, i created this little website to allow businesses to send out different campaigns such as SMS, Voice or text to speech to their customer database. It will automatically call your customers for you and playback your message or have a computer read it out to them. The benefit of it is that you can have your own number show up on their caller ID which will personalize the experience.

i started working on a SaaS project a few weeks back and finished the MVP 2 weeks ago. however i can't put it out yet because every domain name that i can think of which related to the business somehow, is taken! so this is postponing my launch.

have you guys had the same issue before? do you just give up and pick any random available domain?! How important is it for your domain name to be related to the service you are offering?

Healthwise, i have the same cliche "cut down on smoking, excercise more" resolution!

business wise, i'm hoping to double our revenue/traffic for my website (link in profile) and maybe find an interested buyer if the price is right.

also to finish up and launch this other project i've been working and try and make that one a success too!

i'm working on a project which is almost done except the payment aspect of it. I'm wondering what does the HN community use for their SaaS website to accept payments and also do monthly billings?

i was looking at chargify.com and really like what they offer. any other ideas?

When you come back to a thread, how can you tell which are the newly posted comments? For example, there is a post with around 180 comments now and yesterday it only had 165. I want to make sure to only read the 15 new comments and not have to go through all 180 and see which one is new! am i missing something here? the order doesn't show the most recent at the top specially if it's a sub-comment.

for my previous project, we ended up paying a design company to do all the graphics for us.

however now, i'm starting another small side project targeted more towards charity instead of making money and i don't have the capital to pay another design company. it's a google map mashup of some sort but i want the design to be simple and sleek. i found the following theme on themeforest.net which is perfect: http://themes.themolitor.com/wpaid/ but it's a wordpress theme. i'm looking for something exactly similar to this with the red background, the map in the background but something i can use without wordpress.
