Is there anything like a curated list or Wiki of Software Engineering tools; a place where you'd go to see what tools are used for a given task. For instance, tools for Configuration Management, frameworks for Web dev, Database systems, etc.

I'm soon going to buy a new work laptop; it'd be great to get some tips from you guys.

The main usage will be work/study; its hardware should be well supported by Linux (some BSD would be great).

Basic specs I have in mind:

* >= 8GiB RAM

* <= 250GiB SSD

* Processor?

* No dedicated video card

* WiFi and Ethernet cards

* No card reader

* No bluetooth

* Battery >= 3-4 hours

* >= 15 inches screen

This is basically it. My current machine is a 2012/2013 Dell Inspiron 15R, 8GiB RAM, 3rd gen i7.

EDIT: I should also add that I can't spend much more than ~ $1K

How do you exercise yourself? I'd really like to jog -- at least 3 or 4 times a week -- to keep my body well and alleviate stress, but I'm a little afraid of criminals. I will probably end up acquiring a cycle ergometer and exercising at home.

Do you prefer tryping your passphrase every time you use them or you use an agent; if you use an agent, is it 'ssh-agent' or a frontend utility (e.g, Keychain)? If it is ssh-agent, how do you configure it? If it is a backend, what is it and why did you choose it? Please, tell us (me?) about your practices.
