In ancient Greece there were many different city states with a variety of different themes central to them, have we lost this in our homogeneous world?

You are completely free to found communes with anyone that shares your vision.

I believe gated communities fit the definition and as I understand it their numbers increase in certain countries.

Or do you mean financial and legal exemptions from the state? In that case I would disagree with the experiment.
