Worked as a dev for years. Been job searching for years. I'm burned out but I don't want to keep being a welfare leech.
As someone who is unemployed but isn't in any real risk of going homeless or hungry (I live in free, subsidized housing), it's hard to find a source of motivation. I want to know if I need a particular kind of of coaching or at least form of continuous positive reinforcement that often is missing from the lack of a job and lack of imminent crisis like losing your home. I had some mock interviews with two professionals so far but after applying what I've learned from them, I don't see any change in my job situation.
I also sometimes wonder how many more people are like me in this scenario. And if it's even logistically possible to link up all the long-term discouraged workers to appropriate jobs and tie up all the loose ends.
