In the UK, from my experience at least, providers combine the modem and router into one device. In this case, the Numa wouldn't really cover it and you'd need to buy a switch as well.
Not uncommon in the states, but there are workarounds.
We are working on a passthrough USB HFC/coax media converter. Still won't solve the problem 100% of the time, but doing DOCSIS decode and scanning at Layer 2 is possible in a lot of cases.
Comcast and Verizon like to combine them as well in the US. Of course, we have more cable companies and phone companies than those two, but I'm less aware of what they deliver.
You could put this between the device and another router. Someone who would use a device like this would also have a decent router regardless of what their ISP provides.
Well, it is. Just doesn't haven't wifi at the moment. There are two onboard mini-pci slots, so it'd definitely easy to add on (or two) radios. If folks are interested, we may we produce a version that has a/b/g/n or ac wireless.
It is definitely possible to arrive at a similar setup if you are technical. Numa is built entirely from free software. Our hope is to make these tools available to people who are not so technical.
