ReadyNAS security issues (and 'MyPC Backup')

I recently purchased a Netgear ReadyNAS 102. When I set it up, I chose not to register it and not to use the remote cloud backup options. Two things happened that give me cause for concern with it's security:

1. The ReadyNAS emailed me in plain text the Administrator password I gave it.

2. Within an hour, I started getting a lot of phishing emails from "MyPC Backup", informing me of nonsense such as "Your backup was incomplete, please purchase xyz to fix it."

Has anyone else had a similar experience or have any suggestions?
