In this case, the original superblock seems already destroyed, and it sounds it gets the fs autodetection confused, so the suggestion is to use one of backup superblocks but clean up the messed data first.

I ended up mounting the device as ro.

If one wants to recover data from a corrupted device, one should never write anything to it. Any recovery needs to be copied to another device, one should only write a single bit, when one is prepared to zero out all of the others.
