Ask HN: What Architectural Decisions Make You Prefer Windows Dev over Linux?

You could say that Windows is an instance of "Windows-like" operating systems and Linux is an instance of "Unix-like" operating systems. So features of Windows are really features of the "shape" or "likeness" of Windows. And ditto for Linux.

If you're designing an OS from scratch, you'll find many points where you must choose between "Windows-like" or "Unix-like". The Windows-like features fit together naturally, and the Unix-like features fit together naturally. This even extends to the development model. A corporation will find it easier to create a Windows-like OS than a Unix-like OS. But a distributed group of developers will find it easier to make a Unix-like OS.

I can understand people doing it for work reasons - gotta pay the bills, but by choice ?

10 years ago I found it an aggravation that Linux desktops did not pay attention to little details like font metrics so it was not unusual for a label to overflow the space for it. In the past 2 years or so I have had Ubuntu desktop machines that I like using so I think it has gotten better.

I am not really a "Windows Dev", I use Windows to develop web-based applications that often run on Linux servers. Long ago I used to write Silverlight applications with WPF and it was cool, I've got no idea how I would start writing a Windows native GUI program today, however it seems that Microsoft isn't all that sure and would consider "use Electron" or "What the hell is wrong with you? Just make a web app."
