Tell HN: Covidtests.gov shipping old, expired tests

Expiration dates are Jan 2024. While they claim they have "extended expiration dates", these aren't of much use as they aren't necessarily updated for detecting current circulating strains. The Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response (ASPR) is responsible for this.

Rapid tests do not need to be updated for new variants because the proteins that they detect do not change quickly. This has been verified by several studies and continues to be monitored for emerging variants.

They mention this when you order them from the site:

“Expiration Dates Extended Tests may show “expired” dates on the box, but FDA has extended those dates”

FWIW, they seem to work. I have covid right now and they showed positive.

imagine you need a vaccine and they bring out the expired tests that's probably going to do nothing and instead you die or something lmao
