I do use LibreOffice for my academic writing and Zotero help me manage my citations in a super reliable and user friendly way. If you are okay with the looks of a word processor and want a nice experience with citations, have a look at Zotero :)

I have Zotero and don’t use it because I do my research better myself without it and it annoys me when Zotero does a reference incorrectly and then I have to go back and fix it. Irritating. I’d rather just do it correctly myself once and then be done with it.
