The Global North needs to start taking action and facing justice for causing the ecocide in the south. Many of the current ecological crises are in the poorest countries, and by the time it hits the North it will be too late.

Really now? The global north should bear all the blame for the vast range of equally self-interested countries and people who actively scramble to hop aboard the technological/industrial/economic flywheel of development just like anyone else does? Billions of people south of the Tropic of Cancer are just as hungry for consumer products, economic success and convenience as any anglo North American or European, and many of them perhaps more so. But they should entirely be treated as the witless victims of others?

This attitude, aside from being blatantly wrong on the realities of the world is also grossly patronizing towards the very people it claims to support, by painting them as nearly helpless pawns with no agency or deeper capabilities of their own.

I live down in a certain sliver of Mexico and see no shortage of desire for all the energy-guzzling goodies that any American has ever had or wanted. Many millions actively strive to acquire these things and with as little second thought for externalities as anyone in the global north ever has..

Yes, it is up to the global north, if they are going to continue to be the manufacturers of our ideology today, to bear the burden.

According to this excellent Mindscape (Sean Carroll) podcast with Gavin Schmidt (Director of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies,) there is a circle of climate modeling folks who make a yearly bet on the next year's global average temperature. They have been patting themselves on the back for over a decade with how good their estimates have been, Ninos and Ninas, all factored in. Their estimates were generally rising, but as a group they were always within range.

This was the first year where everyone was wrong, as it actually got way hotter.

    - Globally, March 2024 was nominally the warmest March since records began in 1850.
    - The previous record for warmest March was broken by only a very small margin (0.01 °C), within uncertainties this means March 2024 essentially tied with March 2016.

    - The land-average was the 3rd warmest observed, behind 2016 and 2023.
    - Particularly warm conditions occurred in parts of North America, Asia, South America, Africa, and large areas of the Atlantic.
    - No regions exhibited unusually cold monthly averages in March.
    - 43 countries set new national monthly-average records for February.
    - El Niño has weakened to a moderate category, and is likely to end by mid-2024.
    - 2024 is very likely to be either the warmest or second warmest year on record.
