The politicians getting paid off by wealthy oligarchs to maintain their oligarchic wealth, and the voters being told a bunch of lies to justify it, seems a much more parsimonious explanation.

It's not just lab-grown meat. Factory farming, GMOs, etc. are treated as skeptically.
