The way I understand debits and credits is to take the same equation and name the left and right side.

Assets + Expenses = Equity + Income + Liabilities

Sum of all debits = sum of all credits

These two equations have their sides associated.

Assets and equities increase with a debit and decrease with a credit, and vice versa.
