Did it get very big? I know it obviously never challenged Chrome but did it ever get up to like 10% before the switch?

Even if it didn’t it was an independent browser that could have been a competitor until they gave that up.

It currently is still a competitor. The switch of an internal browser engine doesn't make two products no longer competitors.

I’m speaking from the point of view of who is in charge of implementing web standards.

If 80% of people used Edge but it was still based on Chromium, Google would still have a stranglehold on the web.

It could be a four way tie between Chrome, Edge, Brave, and Opera. Google would still have the power.

None of the forks are required to accept every change Google makes or make their browsers a perfect clone. Edge, Brave, and Opera are all in control of their own destinies in making the best product they can.
