I'm a tolerably heavy user of tmux and I simply couldn't work out how tmux in iterm2 helped me, given the primary goal is persistence on the remote site.

I think it’s for people who want the Tmux experience to be consistent both locally and remotely.
Like you, however, I only use Tmux remotely, and either splits or multiple windows locally.
