I've used FreeTaxUSA since 2014 and I've never had to pay for federal, but I have had to pay something for state file. I think it's around $20.

They are free for federal electronic filing, and charge a small fee for state filing.

It is free for federal taxes. The only thing that you are paying for are state taxes.

It's free for me, but I don't have state income taxes.

Well... free is cheaper than not free.
