Even cruise control can help reduce the need to check the speed so often but hills and changing traffic limits its use

Hills are the exact reason to use the speed control. It drives me crazy that drivers don’t know how and when to engage it, go 50 up hills and 85 down the other side.

50 up 85 down is the natural way to drive. It’s a waste of fuel to brake downhill (beyond reason).

Solid argument for outlawing fossil fuels.

Lol. Yep, and not to mention regenerative braking on EVs actually recoups and stores the energy as it slows the vehicle's descent!

This is also a problem for electric vehicles, just to a lesser extent.

Right. But let’s make sure there’s a replacement first.

Stopping distances are increased when travelling downhill, so likely more dangerous.

Classic cruise control only applies throttle not brakes

It can brake with the engine (clutch)

Does it? I never seen that. Usually even a slight downhill causes my CC to just not control the speed.
