(Actually, I think there can be multiple tiers, but let's not complicate things.)
That second tier is inherently not private, but I think it's nonetheless where most people want to spend most of their time. Without it, you're easily overwhelmed by whatever wants to shout loudest: trolls, spammers, AI, scams, etc.
It's one of those situations that benefits from putting all of your eggs in one basket, and then ensuring that it's a really good basket. Not that X has shown itself capable of building really good baskets, but I do think they're on to something.
- After the takeover by Elon, X has been pretty much clear on where and what it stands for. Elon, on one hand says it a "digital town square" and on the other has repeatedly said will follow the "rule of the land", which by their very nature contradicts each other.
- Data breach is inevitable, where does it leave you.
I do believe some sort of check needs to be placed, but THIS IS NOT THE WAY! Lives are at stake whether one opts in or one doesn't.
Sounds something like the honne (true self) and tatemae (public identity) distinction in Japan: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honne_and_tatemae. I really do not think we want to go down that route because of the variety of social and mental health issues that the Japanese seem to have that come with repressing oneself and maintaining a fake identity 24/7, e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smile_mask_syndrome.
