There are people who ascribe all kinds of different brain states to binaural beats. But as of yet, I don't think anyone has ever done a "blind" test, where they listen to binaural beats that are supposed to imitate an LSD trip, versus one that is supposed to make you relaxed, etc., to see if it is possible to differentiate their "effect" on the person.
I'm willing to bet without knowing ahead of time what you are supposed to expect, nothing related to what was expected will happen.
I'm a collector of all things snake oil, so of course I find this an interesting field. I have total doubt there are any effects (other than outright annoyance over the sound itself) to be had from them.
Slow repeating patterns can relax people (Enya and Jean Michelle Jarre are two musicians who have mastered it), so I will give it at least that level of leeway. But the rest, I'm quite sure, would not stand any level of testing on people who aren't pre-told what to expect.
