I'm having a hard time believing the Kia Soul has so much more cargo space with the seats folded.

Thank you for that, that's a very detailed comparison! I use my Kia Soul like a truck sometimes, I've hauled around a push lawn mower plus tools as well as large music equipment, just laid canvas down in the back. Very useful. It makes sense that a hatchback vs. a cube car shape you would lose that vertical space.
