Ask HN: What advice would you give to new or upcoming grads?

Many are in the same boat as me looking for suggestions. I recently graduated a few months ago. Back then I was getting multiple opportunities to interview for companies. Unfortunately, I wasn't actively looking back then, but I am now.

The job market seems to be dry for early career folks. For example, senior engineers I know are still getting interviews and offers. But the story isn't the same for new grads.

Do you folks have any suggestions on what I should do. Here are my thoughts:

1. Keep applying for jobs and see what happens after one month

2. Get an MBA

3. Get my masters in AI or something else?

4. Get a law degree

5. Start my own startup

Since you are in the job search phase, get completely organized for it.

Allocate your time for job research and apply for multiple open positions that interest you.

Followup on job applications from the previous week where you haven't heard back.

Focus on a side-project: If you are interested in AI, you may try to learn some of the frameworks, review open source projects and perhaps contribute to them in terms of code/documentation/issues/Pull requests etc.,

Meet different people and build a (real) network. See if there are projects you could work on for them that helps you learn and build experience.

Talk about all of this in your job interviews.

Show up on time with a smile on your face. People look out for people they are agreeable with. Do that in any industry and you can write your own ticket
