HN users might be self selecting for this bias towards a dense static design. 1. this website meets those criteria, 2. tech orientated people are power users who prefer the UI to get out of the way.
I don't think I'm that different to the average user. Maybe just more mileage but anyone can evolve and realize what was cute and enjoyable is not required anymore.
