Ask HN: How do I learn to engineer HFT systems from first principles?

I'm a skilled backend and platform engineer, and I would like to learn the fundamentals of engineering medium- and high-frequency trading systems holistically and from first principles. Where are good places to start? This is more of an academic and intellectual exercise, than seeking to get something deployable.
