I'm not super knowledgeable on how DNS systems work. I'm confused about how it can be a one time payment and still be owned by you without a registrar billing you yearly to keep it?

Will this work with typical browsers? would be great to put a website at a .ether domain

Yes I think that’s what a lot of these Web3 domain names need.
