Ask HN: Do any of you care about developer certifications?

At one my first corporate jobs, I noticed that most people in my area had a bunch of certifications framed and on their cubicle walls. I thought, "I want one of those!" So I got one, and framed it. Fun. No big deal, though. You can write brilliant, or awful, software with, or without, a certification.

I used to teach certification courses and people attend for different reasons. A common reason is that the test covers the things that you should know to be successful in a given technology and the exercise of studying to know those subjects improves your skillset. Some people just love learning and want the sense of accomplishment from hitting a milestone. Some people came from the government contracting sector where the number of certifications reflected well on contract bids, so the company encouraged their people to get the certifications. Another reason is that in a competitive market, where two resumes, experience, personality fit are similar, the certification might be the deciding factor.

Not here, nor anywhere I've been. Maybe they're useful? I can understand a degree from any university, and I can validate your creds with the institution. Certs? Nah. Plenty of cheats available anyway.

The reason I ask is that I see certifications all over the place. Frankly, I couldn't care less about them, but wonder why some folks seem to want them and feel that they are valuable.
