This impression does not match reality. It's great to work with. I'd certainly take it over ocaml (having spent probably thousands of hours on both).

That's why OCaml won over Haskell and Standard ML for me. The authors are not afraid to “get their hands dirty” with procedural constructs or even OOP for the cases where those things are useful.
