That’s the claim. The article doesn’t state whether the boy actually has these problems and, if so, whether they were (conclusively) caused by the AirPods (my guesses would be “yes” and “wouldn’t dare say”)

The noise intensity to rupture an eardrum would have to be very loud, usually 165 decibels or more. This would correspond to the sound intensity of a gunshot at close range, fireworks or extremely loud music.”

165dB is extremely loud.

it's not like my ears hurt, but it is annoying when I fall asleep while listening to something (it's a habit I have, I know, maybe not the best) and if the timing is bad it can pull me right out some transitory sleep phase. would be nice if they were a bit smarter about that signal...
