the optimist in me sees this enzyme becoming present in the general ecosystem and plastics everywhere come under threat.

There's a 60s sci-fi story where that happens. It goes airborne. The insulation on wiring starts to break down. Telephones and power systems are the first things to go.

Look around you now and see how many objects in your vicinity would survive.
