The t440p is a tank and with a 4core i7 still a capable machine and one of the only mobile machines that you can properly tripple boot with Linux, Mac OS, Windows each on a physical HDD. (1x m2 and 2x sata ssds). You can get one for 120 bucks and update nearly everything (don't get the one with Nvidia graphics), spare parts are cheap and plenty. I run a 2560x1440 IPS panel, 16GB RAM, i7 4710mq, 3 disks and a t480 touchpad (needs a slight mod). The only downsides are the missing usb-c and form factor if you are used to ultrabooks.

Other downside, no dedicated HDMI port.

Speaking of tanks. I have a T400 from minifree. No PC has ever matched the boot time.

I agree that's a sad baseline. However they do have a decent upgrade option which IMHO is a no brainer:

these machines have osboot, based on coreboot, that replaces proprietary bios/uefi firmware, and a libre OS like linux/bsd with full driver support. encrypted ssd by default. secure, private laptops for people who need it. no proprietary bloatware, just freedom. sales fund osboot development

I love the idea! Just make sure you definitly get the t450 touchpad upgrade or you will regret it forever. Nothing worse than a t*40-series touchpad.

Everybody would love that. But until Intel does not release the sources for ME this is a no go.

Yeah, except this is bullshit. “sources for ME” have nothing to do with anything, the binaries can be analyzed without source code.

ME_cleaner can effectively kill ME on newer systems too, leaving a small bit of not scary code that runs at startup.

It’s actually possible to audit ME and have an informed conversation about whether or not the bits left after ME_cleaner are scary.

However, if you believe Intel to be malicious you should be worried about what they might have hidden in the parts of their hardware that can’t easily be audited.
