Has anyone tried any linux dist that runs smoothly on a mac? I've been waiting for Asahi Linux (https://github.com/AsahiLinux) but I don't think it will be ready anytime soon

No, it's not anywhere near ready for end users on bare metal yet.

you can run various ARM flavors of Linux in a virtual machine just fine, though.
