Hamas won by a landslide an election in the entire occupied territories. Fatah didn't like the result, and took up arms against their new leadership. The Hamas government succeeded in retaining control in Gaza, but failed in the West Bank. In essence, there was a successful coup in the West Bank. Fatah is
not the legitimate representative of the Palestinian people.
