It might be fun to laugh at conspiracy theories concerning aliens and reptiles, but in saying the above, conspiracy theorists do have a point, and there's also a lesson that's applicable in general, which I can summarise as:
Fact checking (or any kind of fact serving) is worth shit if it's done by someone with (or which serves) interests counter to you.
For the same reason you shouldn't hire a lawyer recommended to you by the person that you're suing.
